Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on 4th April in 1972. She was raised by both her mother and grandmother. Scott is an all-only child. Scott attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following her graduation her school, she went to Temple University. She completed her secondary education there while working two jobs. She hoped to be the high school's English teacher. After three years as teacher's assistant and studying her goal to become a high school English teacher came to a halt. As a poet started performing, she was able to perform in live poetry recitals. She later teamed along with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create a group. They ended up collaborating in writing You Got Me. Then, during Roots performance, she revealed herself as an artist. After that, she began working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. In the Canada tour of The Broadway musical Rent, she gained valuable experiences performing. She was contracted to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
